Having just read an article in the New York Times last week about how disaster is awaiting those 3rd world countries in earthquake zones, comes the news that an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit central, coastal Chile. Hundreds are dead, thousands upon thousands are displaced from homes and thousands are unaccounted for.
While there are many ways to contribute to Chileans who have been affected by the earthquake. Look into UNICEF‘s US fund as one option. Also, I tried texting “Chile” to the American Red Cross at 90999 a couple minutes ago and they aren’t yet accepting text donations. They directed me to redcross.org. The idea that earthquakes in coming years will be as destructive in 3rd world countries, if not more, is frightening. Perhaps the one silver lining out of these devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile is that other countries will begin to really invest in infrastructure updates and prepare for the possibility of earthquake damage.
